ABOUT LYMPHEDEMA TREATMENT

Melinda Halford, PT, CLT, Cert. MDT, is a certified Lymphedema Therapist with advanced post-graduate training in Lymphedema management.

Lymphedema is chronic swelling caused by an overload in the lymphatic system. It can occur after surgery, injury, or as a result of other medical conditions, but anyone experiencing swelling may benefit from Lymphedema treatment.

Common Causes of Chronic Swelling:

  • Surgical removal of lymph nodes or damage to the lymphatic system from radiation

  • Injury to the lymphatic system from surgery or trauma

  • Unmanaged vein problems that can lead to secondary lymphatic damage

  • Blood clots

  • Congenital malformations of the lymphatic system (may appear later in life)

  • Temporary or chronic swelling from illness, injury, or surgery.

Methods of treatment include:

  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): A specialized, gentle massage technique using light pressure to reroute lymph fluid from swollen areas to healthy, functioning lymph nodes and vessels elsewhere in the body. Patients can also be taught a simpler version, Simple Lymphatic Drainage (SLD), for self-management at home.

  • Compression Therapy: Applying external pressure to the affected area to prevent fluid reaccumulation and encourage lymphatic flow. This involves multi-layered, low-stretch bandages during the initial intensive phase and custom-fitted compression garments (sleeves or stockings) for lifelong daily maintenance.

  • Decongestive Exercises: Specific flexibility, strengthening, and aerobic exercises are performed, often while wearing compression, to stimulate muscle pump action which helps move fluid out of the affected limb.

  • Patient Education and Self-Management: A critical aspect is teaching patients the knowledge and skills to manage their condition independently throughout their life, including home care, lifestyle modifications (e.g., maintaining a healthy weight), and recognizing signs of infection.

Melinda is experienced in Lymphedema Therapy and has positive results in relieving her patients from the pain and discomfort this condition causes.
